Caproate Profile

Caproate itself is nothing but there is a drug named Hydroxyprogesterone Caproate available in the market. It is available in the market under the trade name of Makena. This is available in the form of injection. It is mainly used to reduce the risk of birth of a premature baby especially when the woman has already once suffered from giving birth to a premature baby. If the woman has gone more than once from giving birth to a premature then this Makena should not be used.

Normal dosage of Makena is about 250 mg per week taken in the form of an injection. The dosage should be started from 16th week. It should be administered till the 37th week. But as you adminster this drug then you should strictly follow what doctor has told you to do. There are some precautions to take and some important things one should know before starting this Caproate. Following are few important things which one must know and due to that should not use this drug:

  • If you are having allergy with castor oil or Hydroxyprogesterone.
  • If there is some bleeding from vagina which is unusual and that bleeding is not being checked by the doctor so far.
  • If you are having a liver cancer or some disease related to liver.
  • If you have cancer due to hormones such as uterine or breast cancer.
  • If you have blood pressure which is constantly not under the control.
  • If you had jaundice during your last pregnancy.
  • If you had blood clot, stroke or circulation problems in the past.
  • If you have any history of thrombosis.
  • If you have a low level of tolerance against glucose.

Whenever you go to doctor when you have become pregnant for the second time after a premature baby the first time, then you should always tell the doctor about all above mentioned things about you. Apart from them there are other things such as having kidney or heart diseases, migraine headaches, depression, retention of fluid, asthma and history of diabetes in the family must also be brought under the notice of doctor.

There are some side effects also associated with the usage of this drug. In some patients there is perhaps no or minor side effect. Some of the common side effects associated with this drug are itching, a bit of mild bruising, diarrhea, pain at the place of injection and nausea etc. When these conditions occur and persist you should consult doctor. There are some other conditions also on which doctor should be immediately consulted. These include reactions of severe Allergy like rashes, itching, breathing difficulty, rashes, hives, mouth swelling, face swelling, lips swelling and unusual hoarseness. Other include leg pain, calf pain, blood oozing, fluid oozing, increased pain over the time, headache of severe nature, dizziness, hand swelling, ankle swelling, shortening of breath, feet swelling and yellowing of skin and eyes.  As Makena is discontinued after 37th week but still some of its amount is found the milk of the mother which she feeds to new born but that do not harms the infant.

As told earlier that as the doctor prescribes you should follow that and also takes the medicine timely. In case you have missed the dose you should immediately contact the doctor. The dosage is given in the form of injection and it is highly recommended that injection should be given slowly. The solution of the injection is oily and in viscous form. If you are having any injection of Makena which is kept for more than 5 weeks, than that injection should be discarded.
